Have you ever thought about the value of time? How about the time you spend going back and fourth to work almost daily? What if you are able to do something with that time, rather than waste it on the road?
There is roughly about 155 million full time workers in the United States. Every day, at least 5 days a week, each drive an hour to work and and hour coming back. And if your drive happened to be shorter than an hour, add the time it takes you to get ready, get coffee, make lunch, and so on. And remember that in many places people literally sit in their cars of 2 hours each way. But stay with me for a minute please.
Let us make the math easy and error on the safe side. Say we have 150 million people working. And if each drive back and fourth is effectively 1 hour, that is 300,000,000 hours wasted every day. And we are only talking time here not the impact on the roads, environment, stress, etc.
Now consider the following. A full time worker, works 40 hours a week. that is 2080 hours a year. Let us multiply that by 30, a typical number of years most people work before retirement, that is 62,400 hours. Now, if we divide 300,000,000/62,400 = 4,807 (after rounding).
What does that tell us? Well if rather than driving to work one day, if we all worked these 2 hours We can pay for the retirement of 5000 people. Just in one day!
Can you imagine! While you are being told about social security and other "entitlement" programs running out of money, We can pay for 5000 people not to retire, but rather not to work a day in their life, if we do not drive to work one day!
Of course the logic has flaws in it. (1) if we actually let 5k retire every day, soon we will not have enough hours to justify the above math. (2) Not everyone get paid the same. That is a given.
However the point we are trying to illustrate is how stupid this idea of dragging people miles and miles (Particularly in CA or NY, TX, IL) to go to work. Add to that the cost of gas, cars and future pollution. It is time to put and end to this madness. We need to go digital for those who can and for those who cannot, we need to have decent public transportation. That latter saves time, energy and allow people to be productive meanwhile.
Can anyone explain to me why our public transportation stinks and is "evil", while "self driving cars" is the greatest thing ever!!
